St. Timothy Ministries
Ministries at St. Timothy comprise three general areas: Adult, Outreach and Children & Youth. Our congregation participates in numerous initiatives throughout the year, reaching out to help others in the name of Christ. In addition to the ministries listed below, we have also provided Christmas gifts for needy children, participated in Habitat for Humanity and The Lutheran Home, CROP walk for world hunger, and sponsorship of refuge families.
Adult Ministries
Music Ministries
Music has always been an important part of Lutheran worship, and is an important part of our worship at St. Timothy's. Under the leadership of our music director, Peter Gates, we minister through music during our weekly worship of the Lord. Peter directs our Choir group and Hand Chimes group as they share their gifts of music with us. Individual musicians occasionally perform for the congregation during Sunday worship services. Anyone with musical talent is encouraged to share it with the congregation as part of these groups or as a solo performance. Please contact the church office for more information.
Prayer Chain
Our Prayer Chain Ministry prays to our Heavenly Father continuously for the benefit of all those in need. Prayer requests may be called in to church secretary, Adrienne Neutz or by adding them to the sign up sheet in the Narthex. Both allow the ministry to lift up in prayer, each person by name with a specific need.
WELCA
The mission of the Women of the ELCA (WELCA) is to mobilize women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. The purpose is, as a community of women created in the image of God, called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.
The women's organization, WELCA, is a very active ministry at St. Timothy's. Each year, from congregation donations, they prepare layettes for needy new moms. These moms are assisted through the Center for Pregnant Young Teens and Parents in Niagara Falls. The women also enjoy an annual summer picnic, and gatherings such as the WELCA Spring Assembly and WELCA Day Apart. The WELCA also provides support for many other church activities throughout the year!
Outreach Ministries
Day Care Ministry (STLCCC)
St. Timothy Lutheran Child Care Center has been a ministry to children in the Grand Island community for nearly 20 years. The dedicated director, teachers, and support staff have many years of child care experience. Many of them have been serving STLCCC for fifteen years! Their committment to the Lord Jesus Christ, the church, and to our children shows through in this loving, family oriented child care center. See the STLCCC page for more information.
As part of our ministry to these children, they participate in Children's Church every week. The purpose of the Children's Church is to acknowledge and enhance the spiritual dimension in each child at the daycare center. It is our intent to create an experience which allows children corporately to relate to the love and wonder of God.
Disaster Response ELCA
ELCA's Disaster Response helps bring God's comfort, healing and renewal to those affected by disasters. We act to help those affected by crises such as fighting in the Middle East and Zimbabwe, hurricanes, flooding and food shortages.
St. Timothy's responds to disasters worldwide with financial and other support, as needed. In the past, we helped victims of Hurricane Katrina by sending money to the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod. This synod purchased food and supplies and distributed them to those in need, which helped individuals as well as their local economy.
Lutheran Charities
Lutheran Charities is the means for expressing love and concern for people in need in our community. They are a not-for-profit organization, serving the WNY community since 1980. Lutheran Charities serves not just funding Lutherans, but all people within our community who need love, care and support provided by the many agencies assisted by Lutheran Charities funding. Lutheran Charities supports many programs for children, youths, adults, and seniors, including employment services, summer day camps, campus and prison ministries, pantries, and and adult/senior day centers.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
Thrivent is a faith-based not-for-profit organization that provides financial support for each of its 10,000 branches and 2.6 million members. St. Timothy's is branch #5082. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is the largest fraternal benefit society in the USA, and they exist solely to help others achieve financial security. In addition to personal financial products, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans provides financial support for Lutheran congregations to grow their ministries and facilities.
Children and Youth Ministries
Sunday School
Every week during the school year, Sunday School is provided during the 10:30 am worship service. All children ages preschool through sixth grade are welcome and encouraged to attend. Sunday school provides an opportunity for our children to learn about Jesus Christ and the Holy Bible, do crafts, and make friends in the church.
During the summer, Sunday School does not meet, but all children are encouraged to use an activity tote during either the 8:00 am or 9:30 am service. Activity totes are available in a box the Narthex; please also return the bags after the service.
Confirmation Program
For youths grade 7 through 9, a program of instruction in the Christian faith, as understood by the Lutheran Church, is provided. At the conclusion, youth in grade 9 are offered the opportunity to participate in the Rite of Confirmation.
Lutheran Youth Organization (LYO)
The LYO is an organization of St. Timothy youth. The youth in grades 6 through 12 take part in a variety of activities through the LYO, which enables our young people to be active in the church. They discuss issues that are important to them, in their community, their church, and the world. In addition to discussion, the LYO uses a wide variety of methods and activities to show the love of Jesus Christ in our youth. There is a focus on service, spiritual formation and leadership development.
St. Timothy's LYO raises money in order to fund their trips and other activities. They run a variety of fundraises throughout the year, such as the bottle/can deposit drive, the rummage sale, Ebay sales, and the humble servants program. Recently the St. Timothy's LYO has used their funds to clean up, paint, and re-plant the courtyard. Past activities include a halloween party, Christmas caroling, leading worship, and other service activities. In addition, St. Timothy's LYO members in grades 9 through 12 are able to take week-long ministry trips to places such as Baltimore, Boston and Washington D.C.
